Health Cycle 2

This week in health we will review the Decision Making Process. We will also be using the Decision Making Process and the SMART Method for goal setting and conflict resolution. The students will learn that SMART stands for specific, measurable, action, realistic and time. This method will help them make goals that are attainable and reachable.

Week 5

This week grades K-5 will be participating in the PACER test.  The PACER test is a cardiovascular endurance fitness test which measures how well students can run over long distances.  This will be our first fitness test of the year.  The students will have to run 20 meters consistently to a cadence until they miss 2 laps or until they feel they cannot participate anymore.

For 6th grade we will be going over to the track to complete the mile run.  Students are encouraged to run the entire mile but will be allowed to walk it if they have to.

Health Cycle 1

Grades 3-5

This year, Mr. Hinkel and myself will be teaching health to third and fifth grade. We will be going over a variety of topics that align to the Pennsylvania State Academic Standards for Health. The first topic we will be teaching is Decision Making and Conflict Resolution. We thought these two skills were important to start with.

The first lesson of Decision Making will consist of defining what a decision is, and identifying the steps in the Decision Making Process. The students will get to put the decision making process into practice during the lesson in a variety of activities. We will build on these skills as the year goes on.

Welcome Back!

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. I am looking forward to a great year this year! This years physical education class will consist of many fun and exciting activities/games that will promote teamwork, leadership, cooperation, physical fitness, and skills needed to develop the students into being self sufficient lifelong learners.  I plan to incorporate games such as basketball, kickball, and floor hockey among other things to promote the skills listed above.

Some information that parents/guardians might be interested in are as followed-

1. Students should be dressed for class in a solid color tee shirt or polo shirt or any Spartan shirt.  Shorts are allowed to be worn for P.E. class until daylight savings time.  After that the students will need to wear athletic pants such as sweatpants or jogging pants or khakis.  Both the shorts and pants can have logos on them this year for P.E. class but try to have them as small as possible.  Sneakers are also a must for Physical Education.

2. Students should show either a doctors note or note from their parents/guardian pertaining to the physical health of the student (ie: if the student can't participate in P.E. due to a broken arm, sickness, injury, ect.)

3. Many different avenues will be used for grading the students such as skill tests, pencil and paper assessments, participation, and sportsmanship.

I will use this means of communication to post every unit of instruction I will be teaching and also for listing homework if necessary.  I look forward to a exciting productive year at North Schuylkill Elementary School.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to send me an email at (ebrylewski@northschuylkill.net) and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Thank you,
Miss Brylewski (NSE Health and Physical Education Teacher)

Container Ball and Ships are Sinking

3-6th Grade
This week we will be playing one of the student's favorite games, Container Ball. This game is a action packed game that uses previously learned skills. The students will be broken up into two large teams. The object of the game is to get as many dodge balls as they can into the container on the opposite side of the gymnasium. The way they can get the balls into the container is either by throwing from their side or running onto the opposing teams side to toss it in. If they cross onto the opposing team's side they can be tagged with a dodge ball causing them to go into "jail". If they are in jail they can have a teammate throw them a ball, which they then have to catch it, in order to be freed. Once they are free they can either run back to their side or try to make a shot into the container. We will play timed rounds and then count the dodge balls in the containers.

K-2nd Grade
The students will use previously learned skills such as dodging, fleeing, skipping, running, and  gallopping in this action packed game. This game is called "Ships are Sinking". There will be a couple taggers to start out, who we call the sharks. I will call out "ships are sinking" and students will use different locomotor movements to get from one mat to another without being tagged by the sharks. If they are tagged then they become a shark. We will play different timed rounds for this game.

Week 29

This week the students will be tested on their cardiovascular endurance through the PACER test with the exception of 6th grade who will participate in the mile run to train them for high school.  The PACER test is a multi aerobic capacity test.  The students will have to run 20 meters at a time to a timed cadence that gets faster as the test goes on.  The students will go until they miss 2 consecutive laps or until they feel to tired to continue.

Backyard Games/ Shuttle Run Test

K-6
This week we are teaching different backyard games to our students. Some of the games include Corn Hole, Ladder Golf, Potato Sack Races, Horseshoes, and Washers. We also incorporated mini golf as well. Since the weather is going to start getting warmer we want to give our students some different activities that they can play outside.

We are also administering a fitness test this week. The fitness test is the Shuttle Run. The Shuttle Run assesses the students' agility or how fast they can change direction. Agility is a skill that almost every sport uses. This is one of the many skills that we assess.

Next week grades 3-6 will be working on volleyball skills. The younger grades will be working on lower level volleyball skills with the use of a beach ball.
